Special Needs Pre-Adoption Training

Description: Each class is a 3-day series that is offered as a means of helping prospective parents to develop further insight into their capacity for adopting special needs children. This training fulfills Oregon DHS requirements for adopting children in state care.
Topics covered include:

  •   Foster Care vs. Adoption
  •   Separation and Loss
  •   Attachment
  •   Child Development
  •   Adopting the Sexually Abused Child
  •   Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effects (ARND)
  •   Positive Behavior Management
  •   Cultural Diversity and honoring a child’s heritage
  •   Adoption and its Effects on the Family
  •   Understanding the adoption process (from application to finalization)

Sign up if you are: This training is open to all families pursuing adoption of a child or children from foster care. 
Time format: Weekend; Friday evening, Saturday & Sunday all day (Snacks and Beverages provided!)
Fees: $50 per person*
*may be credited toward Boys & Girls Aid Special Needs Adoption Program application fee

BGAid Foster Parent Training

Description: This training series is designed to prepare families accepted into Boys & Girls Aid Foster Care programs, as well as introduce them to the agency and the foster parent community.
Sign up if you are: Families who have applied to Boys & Girls Aid Foster Care programs are invited to attend this training.

Becoming a Love & Logic Parent ® Training

Description: This training program is designed to give you practical parenting skills that can be used immediately and provide with opportunities to practice and debrief each week.  Classes highlight the use of Love and Logic Parenting® with children who have experienced parenting disruptions and are being raised by foster, kinship, and/or adoptive families.
Sign up if you are: All families are welcome; these classes do not fulfill any specific training requirements for adoption or foster care certification.
Time format: 6 consecutive weeknights (Beverages provided!)
Fees:

  • Non BGAid Family: $125/family
  • BGAid Family: $100/family
  • BGAid Staff Family: $10/person
  • BGAid Foster Family: Free

Independent Pre-Adoption Training

Description: Boys & Girls Aid is offering weekend pre-adoption trainings for families that need to fulfill state requirements for private independent adoption in Oregon.

  •   Meets new requirements for private adoptions in Oregon
  •   Available weekends as a 2-day course in Portland
  •   Developed and presented by a non-sectarian child welfare agency

Sign up if you are: This training is open to families pursuing independent and/or private adoptions in Oregon.
Time format: Weekend; Saturday & Sunday all day.  (Breakfast, Lunch, and Snacks provided!)
Fees: $200 per family.  (Includes one workbook; additional workbooks are $25 each)

Understanding Infant Adoption Training (Spaulding for Children)

Description: This training, developed by Spaulding For Children and federally funded, will increase your knowledge about:

  •   non-directive counseling techniques
  •   grief and loss in adoption
  •   adoption law and practice
  •   birthfather rights and responsibilities
  •   special issues in counseling teens
  •   pregnancy resources in your area

Sign up if you are: This training is open to all professionals and volunteers who may come in contact with pregnant women.

About Our Trainers

.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), Boys & Girls Aid’s training specialist, has been working in the field of child welfare since 1990, and has extensive experience with all members of the adoption triad. As the Training Specialist for Boys & Girls Aid, she regularly conducts in-depth, effective training for adoptive families. She has presented at multiple national, regional, and local conferences on topics such as Attachment; Brain Development in Children; and Culturally Relevant Practices. In addition to trainings listed below, Sally is also available to facilitate Non-Violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training, Collaborative Problem Solving, and other trainings as requested.

.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), Infant Adoption Clinician for Boys & Girls Aid, has been working in the field of adoption since 1999.  Her experience includes working with children who are in residential treatment and with children and families in foster and adoptive placements.  As an adoption clinician for Boys & Girls Aid, Cheri regularly works with all birthparents, adoptees, and adoptive families to ensure that children experience permanency in a healthy, happy manner.  In addition to her role as an adoption clinician, Cheri regularly conducts trainings for adoptive families, as well as for professionals who work with pregnant women.

Since 2002, she has been a social worker providing individual, family and group therapy, primarily in school settings. Monica has experience teaching on topics such as girls’ empowerment, mentoring, family engagement, parenting the sexually abused child, navigating the stages of grief/loss, the culture of poverty, and self-harm. Presently, Monica serves as the Mental Health Coordinator for Portland Public Schools.
