that each night in Oregon, there are about 250 children in foster care waiting for an adoptive family.
The Independent Living Services (ILS) program serves girls ages 16 to 18 who are in DHS custody in Multnomah and Clackamas counties. It is a long-term program, and girls may participate for up to two years. In the program, girls move towards living independently and develop the life skills they need to become successful members of the community.
In the program, girls build independence through 6 levels. Initially, 24/7 sight and sound supervision is required. Clients work at their own pace, gaining more independence and freedom as they move up. With the support of the skills trainer, the case manager, and the foster family, girls can make positive choices about their lives in a caring and supportive environment.
Foster parents are an integral part of the service planning team and help girls with important skills like cooking, laundry, developing routines, completing homework, and engaging in age appropriate recreation. Foster parents are rigorously trained in parenting special needs children and love and logic approaches to youth. They are supported by a team of Boys & Girls Aid staff members, as well as the case manager working directly with the girl.
